Relationship between serum and saliva chloramphenicol concentrations.

The relationship between serum and saliva chloramphenicol (CAP) concentrations was evaluated in 27 paired specimens collected from 20 hospitalized patients during therapy with the drug. A significant (R = 0.80, P < 0.001) but variable relationship was found to exist. Serum protein binding of CAP was also evaluated (43.7 +/- 5.7% bound; N = 24). Differences in CAP binding did not apparently acco...

Distribution and prevalence of chloramphenicol-resistance gene in Escherichia coli isolated from aquaculture and other environment

In Malaysia, the aquaculture industry, particularly the production of freshwater aquaculture fish, is growing rapidly. Nevertheless, the illegal use of banned antimicrobial agents such as chloramphenicol in aquaculture has become a major concern in relation to the safety of consumers and also the development of drug-resistant strains in bacteria. Driven by those factors, the main intention of t...

Chloramphenicol acetyltransferase should not provide methanogens with resistance to chloramphenicol.

Growth of the four methanogens investigated was inhibited by chloramphenicol-3-acetate; therefore, introduction of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase-encoding genes should not confer chloramphenicol resistance on these methanogens. Reduction of the aryl nitro group of chloramphenicol produced a compound which did not inhibit the growth of these methanogens.

Stability of Escherichia coli membrane proteins during chloramphenicol treatment.

It is shown that there is no degradation of previously formed inner and outer membrane proteins of Escherichia coli during 1 h of chloramphenicol treatment.

Chloramphenicol Resistance in Micrococcus Pyogenes

In an earlier report from this laboratory (Wilson and Ramsey, 1955) an antagonism between chloramphenicol and complex materials (yeast extract, proteose peptone #3) was noted. It was suggested that the antagonism observed was possibly due to stimulation of growth, rather than to direct antagonism of the antibiotic. In order to examine more critically the respective roles of stimulation and dire...
